Animal agriculture is directly responsible for many of the world’s most serious environmental problems, including global climate change, deforestation, air and water pollution and species extinction. Three quarters of the food we grow is fed to imprisoned animals for meat and dairy, while roughly a billion people are chronically hungry and starving. Each year, approximately 58 billion animals are cruelly housed and killed in the world’s factory farms and slaughterhouses to produce meat, eggs, and dairy. A UN report urges a global shift towards a plant-based diet and the American Dietetic Association, the leading nutrition authority in the United States, affirms that “vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.”

Our event seeks to bring together a diversity of organizations to signal their concern about these issues and to encourage and promote a non violent, healthy and globally sustainable plant based diet. As you read this, untold millions of animals are suffering and dying in laboratories across the United States. The majority of these animals including rats, mice, birds, amphibians, and all animals used in agricultural research receive no protection under current laws. Federally owned laboratories (such as those owned by the Department of Defense, the NIH, the USDA, EPA, etc.) receive no independent inspections. It has been demonstrated that the USDA does not adequately enforce the very limited requirements of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Labs often break federal laws and more animals are hurt by these infractions every day. Violations are often ignored, fines are reduced or eliminated, and penalties are ineffective.

The use of non-human primates has reached an all-time high with 69,990 experiencing the cruelty of captivity in a laboratory. In university and private settings, squirrel monkeys are confined to restraint chairs and steel screws are drilled into the skulls of rhesus monkeys. Chimpanzees suffer silently for decades as they slowly go insane. Dogs languish in runs as they pine for their families. Electrical coils are forced into the eyes of cats.

Ringling Bros. was on trial earlier this year, for violating the Endangered Species Act, and Ringling employees' testimony revealed what activists have known for years:

All the Ringling handlers strike the elephants with a bullhook (a weapon resembling a fireplace poker). ** PETA just released a great new undercover video, taken this year, of Ringling employees beating and hitting elephants. Visit www.circuses.com to view the video and take action. **

Elephants are chained 16 to 22.5 hours a day, often much longer when they are on the train.

Baby elephants are taken from their mothers to be broken and trained to do unnatural tricks for the circus. The "Breaking process" involves: (1) taking the baby elephants from their mothers while they are still nursing; (2) isolating the babies from all other elephants; (3) tying the babies up so they are severely restricted in their movement and not even able to turn around; and (4) hitting the babies with bullhooks. One baby elephant was tied up for four months and only untied for 40 minutes a day to be trained. A truly traumatic ordeal for little baby elephants and their mothers.

The Ringling trial continues and a ruling is expected later this summer or Fall.

Comments: Please join us in support of the elephants suffering at Six Flags. All materials will be provided.

Six Flags keepers use force and physical punishment to train and maintain dominance over the elephants and make them do unnatural tricks and give elephant rides. Six Flags handlers use bullhooks, fireplace poker-shaped devices with a sharp steel hook at the end, to stab, hook and hit the elephants in sensitive parts of the body. (Although elephant skin appears tough, it is so delicate that an elephant can feel the pain of an insect bite).

In public, keepers will prod the elephants lightly, in private, keepers have been witnessed forcefully stabbing the hook in the soft tissue behind the ears, inside the mouth, around the anus, and in tender spots under the chin.

No room to roam
Six Flags crams elephants – who naturally walk 10 miles or more a day – into small spaces that cause them to develop arthritis and foot disease.

Since 1995, nine elephants (including two full-term calves) have died at this park from causes that include: severe arthritis and feet so infected they bled and oozed pus; massive infection from a dead calf decomposing in the mother’s womb, and an elephant herpes infection in a 2-year old baby elephant who was taken prematurely from his mother.

KFC Demonstration

KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can’t even walk, and often break their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious. It would be illegal for KFC to abuse dogs, cats, pigs, or cows in these ways.

KFC’s own animal welfare advisors have asked the company to take steps to eliminate these abuses, but KFC refuses to do so. Many advisors have now resigned in frustration.
